Requesting a Recommedation Letter

As a Quality Manager currently seeking employment, and have already left job (I wasn't fired, but after working there for almost 12 years I submitted my letter of resignation as a last hope.  I didn't even put a timeline, it was an attempt to wake upper management ... and I was asked to pack up and leave NOW).

My question is that I have several references from co-workers, subordinates, peers, etc.  However, I think using the company's registrar auditor as a reference would be key.  But before I ask I am wondering if in some way it is unethical for he/she to be a reference for me?

Any comments, suggestions or ideas are appreciated.  Thanks.
